Infertility is a serious condition not to be taken lightly. It has the ability to break or build families, not to mention the adverse self esteem effects it can have on a person who cannot be able to bring forth a new being into the world.
People tend to think that if a woman is not getting pregnant the fertility issue must be with the woman, but that is not necessarily always the case. There is an equal chance that male factor infertility can be the cause of a couple’s difficulty in achieving pregnancy. While women have many tests to try to find out the cause of infertility, men have only a couple, the sperm analysis being the easiest.

- Poor diet choices affect male fertility in a number of ways. Body cells cannot function properly in an acidic and toxic environment. When the diet is nutrient poor and chemically loaded, the body eventually becomes toxic and disease may follow. Specific issues include excessive caffeine intake and deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin C, selenium, zinc and folic acid.
- Alcohol and drug dependency can be associated with poor health and reduced fertility. Cocaine and marijuana may temporarily lower the number and quality of sperm.
- Obesity can cause male infertility by affecting sperm production, reducing sex drive and making intercourse physically difficult to accomplish.
- Stress, anxiety, lack of sleep and exercise all adversely affect fertility. Excessive or prolonged emotional stress may interfere with the hormones needed to produce sperm, thus lowering sperm concentration. Infertility itself can sometimes become a long-term, discouraging problem; producing additional stress.
- Certain medical conditions or diseases can affect the reproductive organs. Diseases affecting reproduction can be infectious, such as STDs and viral infections like mumps or can be inflammatory, autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. Leaving an STD, such as chlamydia, untreated can cause scar tissue to block the urethra, leaving sperm unable to connect with the egg. Certain conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, Cushing’s syndrome or anemia may affect sperm production and reduce a male’s sex drive.
- Environmental exposure to pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and other chemicals may cause female hormone-like effects in the male body and may be associated with reduced sperm production and testicular cancer. Lead exposure may also affect the sperm’s ability to penetrate and bind to the egg.
- Increased scrotal temperature can reduce sperm production and inhibit maturation. In order for sperm to mature properly, they must by kept 2-3 degrees below normal body temperature. This is why the testicles are housed in the scrotum and not in the abdominal cavity. Spending too much time in saunas or hot tubs, wearing tight underwear, using a laptop computer directly on the lap and cycling for long periods of time without a break can negatively affect sperm.
- Other types of drugs can also contribute to infertility. For example, anabolic steroids, which are testosterone injections frequently taken by body builders and performance athletes, can cause the testicles to shrink and sperm production to decrease.
- Men who smoke tobacco may have a lower sperm count than do those who do not smoke.

- Radio frequency electromagnetic waves (RF-EMW) – A study performed in 2011 (Fert. Ster. 1/2012) showed that RF-EMWs emitted from devices connected to Wi-Fi (wireless internet) decrease sperm motility, while increasing sperm DNA fragmentation. Men should avoid using laptop computers running on a Wi-Fi connection directly on their lap. In addition, be sure to avoid carrying a smartphone in your front pocket.
- Soy foods – Highly processed soy foods (soy milk, soy burgers, etc.) contain concentrated amounts of isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen shown to block estrogen receptor sites that are needed for testosterone.

Tomatoes are one of the best food sources of the antioxidant lycopene. There have been several studies undertaken on lycopene and male fertility and it has been found to significantly improve motility (the sperms ability to swim), activity and structure of sperm.
Lycopene is more available in cooked or processed tomatoes, so use tomato puree for a real hit and add olive oil to aid absorption of this fat-soluble antioxidant.
Walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and according to a study by the Society for the Study of Reproduction eating around 75g of walnuts (about a handful) daily is linked with increased sperm vitality, motility and morphology. They’re a great way to add flavor and crunch to salads or as a nutritious mid afternoon snack to help manage blood sugar levels.
Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc which plays an important role in sperm development and testosterone production. They are also rich in several other essential minerals and vitamins. Choose raw, organic pumpkin seeds for optimal nutritional value and sprinkle into cereals, salads and smoothies.
Lentils are one of the richest food sources of folate (natural folic acid) which is just as important for male fertility as it is for female fertility.It has been found that men who have a lower intake of folate from their diet have higher rates of chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm.
Blueberries are wonderful source of powerful, anti-inflammatory antioxidants including quercetin and resveratrol. Studies show that quercetin can help in maintaining healthy sperm parameters including motility and quality and resveratrol has been found to improve sperm count and motility.
One of the simplest ways of improving sperm count and quality is to drink enough water. Semen is water based and increasing liquid consumption can help increase the ejaculate and improve sperm production.Ensure it is more water that you are consuming, caffeine is a diuretic and soft drinks may be linked with lowering sperm counts.
Pomegranate has long been considered a super-food due to its high antioxidant content which can improve blood circulation, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and lower inflammation. Research shows that pomegranate causes surges in testosterone, improves sperm quality and increases sex drive and mood in both sexes.
Dark chocolate is a rich source of the amino acid L-arginine which studies show can increase the volume of ejaculate and improve sperm count and motility. The darker the chocolate, the better – try the delicious bittersweet 85 per cent dark chocolate … a little goes a long way.

Although studies seem to show that caffeine does not adversely affect sperm count, the ability to swim or the shape of the sperm, an American study found that higher caffeine consumption appears to reduce the chances of a clinical pregnancy during IVF. So (both partners) try and keep to one (decent) cup of coffee daily.
Don’t rush out and buy the full fat version though as the high sugar content is not good news and research shows that men who consume more soft drinks of any kind tend to have lower sperm counts.
